The Lamington Crayfish
Euastacus Sulcatus
This species of crayfish grows up to 24 cm in length and is found in pools and streams of the sub-tropical rainforest above an altitude of 450 metres. They are a vivid blue and white with orange or red markings. During the dry winter months they remain hidden in crevices or burrows. When the air is moist, they leave the water to move about on the forest floor. When approached, they will defensively rear up, wave their large claws and produce hissing sounds. Eggs are produced in November and December and as with most crayfish, the female carries them under her tail.
